Mao began his steady rise to power in 1921 when he became a founding member of the CCP. In 1927 the anti-communist purge was launched. This is when Mao fought for his party. He led the communist into the south of China in what is known as the long march. This kept the CCP alive. After World War 2 another civil war broke out. This time the Communist were victorious. The nationalist were sent away to Taiwan.
After Mao took power he began to reshape China into an industrial Communist country. He set up sharecropping and violently destroyed any opposition. In 1958 Mao introduced the Great Leap Forward. His plan to boost industry and crop production led to mass famine and millions of deaths. This caused a big decline in Mao’s power.
In 1966 Mao introduced the cultural revolution. This campaign was aimed at reasserting power and purging what Mao considered Chinas impure elements. This destroyed much of China's culture and killed half a million people. With cities on the verge of anarchy Mao sent in the army to re-assert authority.
